چکیده

Particle-in-cell and hybrid electron-Boltzmann simulations of planar and cylindrical Langmuir probes are compared with various probe theories. Floating potentials for planar and cylindrical probes are calculated and significant deviations from the typical approximation used for argon discharges of 5Te are shown. The interpretation of simulated ion saturation currents by the orbital motion limited and the Laframboise theories result in an overestimation of the ion density. On the other hand, the cold-ion theory underestimates the ion density. These deviations are related to the overestimation and underestimation, respectively, of the ion orbital motion around cylindrical probes. The best agreement is obtained when the probe theory suggested by Tichy et al. is used. This theory incorporates ion orbital motion as in the Laframboise theory, collisional orbital motion destruction as suggested by Zakrzewski and Kopiczynski, and ion scattering as given by Chou et al. © 2006 American Vacuum Society. Evaluation of Langmuir probe ion density measurement in weakly ionized discharges using plasma oscillation probes and microwave interferometry

A comparison study is made of the classical theories of the determination of the ion density Ni from the ion current Ii to a cylindrical Langmuir probe vs bias voltage Vb in weakly ionized RF plasmas. A broad parameter range is examined in a commercial inductively coupled plasma (ICP). Accurate local electron density Ne values (Ne,MWI) obtained from Abel inversion of chord-averaged microwave in...

Detailed Measurements of Poloidal Velocity of Density and Floating Potential Fluctuations in the Edge Plasma of the CASTOR Tokamak

The ion saturation current and floating potential are measured with high temporal (1 μs) and spatial (2.5 mm) resolutions within the edge plasma of CASTOR tokamak by two poloidally spaced radial arrays of Langmuir probes. The radial electric field and the phase velocity of plasma fluctuations are determined. It is found that radial profiles of both of these quantities are strongly sheared in th...

The floating potential of cylindrical Langmuir probes

The formula normally used to calculate the space potential Vs from the measured floating potential V f is derived for plane probes and is erroneous when applied to cylindrical probes in the low-density plasmas (n,10 cm) used in industrial plasma processing. The plasma potential Vs is of interest because it determines the sheath drop which governs the energy of ions bombarding the walls or a sil...

A floating potential method for measuring ion density

A simple method for analyzing Langmuir probe curves is described which yields the ion density in weakly collisional plasmas for which purely collisionless theories give erroneous results. The method is based on an extrapolation to the floating potential of the saturation ion current raised to the 4/3 power. This procedure is not supported by theory but apparently works because effects neglected...

Mirror Langmuir probe: a technique for real-time measurement of magnetized plasma conditions using a single Langmuir electrode.

A new method for the real-time evaluation of the conditions in a magnetized plasma is described. The technique employs an electronic "mirror Langmuir probe" (MLP), constructed from bipolar rf transistors and associated high-bandwidth electronics. Utilizing a three-state bias wave form and active feedback control, the mirror probe's I-V characteristic is continuously adjusted to be a scaled repl...
